Born in a Blackberry Patch

Huntersville Presbyterian Church was born in a blackberry patch, or at least the idea was conceived there as two of her earliest members picked blackberries in 1878 near the spot where the first church building was erected a couple of years later.

The congregation began with 40 members and the pastor, Dr. James Fair Latimore, a professor at nearby Davidson College.

Time passed and the church grew.  In the early 1920's, a brick structure was erected nearer the center of Huntersville and was first occupied on January 13, 1924.  The next pastor, Dr. Grier, remained until the mid 50's.  The church continued to flourish at this site.  After Dr. Grier's retirement, an energetic young man named Joe S. McClure, who had served this church during his seminary days, was called to be the pastor.

In the mid-eighties, a new sanctuary was constructed beside the 1921 building.  On July 31, 1988, the first service was held in this new building.  To make the "old-timers" feel at home in a new building, the present sanctuary was made to look as much like the old one as possible.  With two aisles, the pews are arranged in a semi-circle.  The pulpit furniture is the same as what was used in the old sanctuary.  In the lobby, the marble-topped communion table used in the first sanctuary is on display.

Members recall inspiring sermons, family camp, fish fries, challenging Sunday School Classes, spiritual renewal weeks, workshops, retreats, and other spiritual nurturing activities as part of the heritage of this church.

HPC continues to build on its heritage.
